Looms of Ladakh

Looms of Ladakh is a rural women’s cooperative movement to establish the luxury textile cottage industry of Ladakh. It aims to expand to all villages of Ladakh and hand-hold rural women members in craft revivalism, skill development and democratic management of cooperative business and affairs through elected representatives.

It was conceived as a farm to fashion initiative, committed to extend due recognition to the pashmina, yak, bactrian camel and sheep wool rearing communities and its artisans. The cooperative luxury brand is equipped with resources to create a value chain and generate income through the skills of handspinning, natural dyeing, weaving and knitting.

Over 200 women from Changthang are member owners of Looms of Ladakh which trains and guides them in developing high quality products from their own pashmina and yak wool that they rear traditionally. Mindful of the challenges facing Changpa herders, Looms of Ladakh tries to couple real issues like the practice of slow paced consumption and living sustainably with the need to provide a steady employment with homespun solidarity.
