All Changthang Pashmina Growers Cooperative Marketing Society

The All Changthang Pashmina Growers Cooperative Marketing Society (ACPGCMS), or the Herders’ Cooperative, is a keystone in the value chain of Ladakh Pashmina. Set up in 1995, it is an association of the pashmina rearing people of Changthang aiming to fulfil their economic and social aspirations.

All pashmina rearers from Changthang are members of this Cooperative Society which is governed by a Board of Directors chosen from among the members. The executive functioning is managed by two office bearers, elected from among the members.Community-level, primary service cooperatives facilitate participation of all 22 Changpa communities in free and fair sale of their pashmina.

Increased returns to herders
(2004 to 2021)

Since its inception the Herders’ Cooperative ensured systematic procurement of raw pashmina from its members thus protecting and promoting the interests of nomadic livestock herders by ensuring stable and remunerative prices for their pashmina. By doing so the Herders’ Cooperative has consistently provided herders a higher rate for their pashmina- protecting them from international and national pashmina price fluctuations.

The ACPGCMS also run a scouring and dehairing plant in Leh where raw pashmina from Changthang is processed to dehaired fibre. It is the only agency sourcing Ladakh Pashmina while ensuring a fair price to its producers; the herders of Changthang.
